Without proper maintenance, sanitary hot water systems can quickly turn into bacteria pools. Some of them, such as Legionella pneumophila, proliferate in silence, until they trigger fatal pulmonary infections for vulnerable people.
To protect the population from the risk of legionellosis, regulations require close monitoring of sanitary systems, as well as shock disinfection treatments if critical thresholds are reached.
Legionella are micro-organisms naturally present in lake and river water. But in the wild, the concentrations are not high enough to present a danger for human health.
On the other hand, poorly designed or maintained sanitary systems can quickly act as an “incubator” for legionella, which are fond of limescale, stagnant water, and water heated to around 40-50°. These pathogenic bacteria, carried by hot water under pressure, are then inhaled in the form of water vapor or droplets.
Consequently, some public buildings must be closely monitored to avoid any risk for fragile people, whose immune system is weakened. Among these establishments that must implement monitoring measures for facilities at risk of legionella, we find the following:
